Outlaws Win Shootout with NY to Advance to MLL Title Game

Fairfield, Conn. - The Denver Outlaws advanced to the franchise's sixth all-time Major League Lacrosse championship game with a 20-17 victory over the New York Lizards in Saturday's semifinal playoff game Rafferty Stadium.

The Outlaws are currently riding a seven-game win streak that has propelled them from a 2-6 start to the MLL Championship game. The finale will take place at Fifth Third Bank Stadium at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Ga., with kickoff set for 5:00 p.m. MDT.

"It was a tremendous effort all over the field by an amazing group of guys that had their backs against the wall to find a way week after week to pull off some victories against some awfully tough teams," Head Coach B.J. O'Hara said. "They did it again today in some really oppressive heat conditions. I couldn't be more proud."

The Outlaws will be making its sixth MLL Championship appearance since joining the league in 2005 and its second appearance in three seasons. Denver defeated Rochester 12-11 on Aug. 23, 2014, for its first MLL title.

The win was sealed with contributions from down the roster. Attackman Matt Kavanagh set a personal best with five goals and goalie Jack Kelly delivered a career-best 24 saves.

The Outlaws struck back quickly with back-to-back goals from attackmen Kavanagh and Drew Snider after falling behind early. Another set of back-to-back goals from attackman Mike Bocklet narrowed the Outlaw's deficit to 5-4 after one quarter.

The Outlaws dominated the second quarter with six unanswered goals in 3 minutes and 6 seconds of play. The Outlaws sent the game into the half with an 11-8 lead. Midfielder Thomas Kelly kicked off the six-goal scoring drive with his first goal of the day. Three more Outlaws would continue the streak, with Kavanagh's second and third of the day, Jeremy Sieverts second and midfielder Michael Simon's first and second of the game.

The third quarter of the game proved to be a gritty shootout, with both sides scoring six goals during the period. Five different Outlaws stepped up beginning with Kavanagh, who notched his fourth and fifth goals of the game. Mike Bocklet and Sieverts completed hat tricks in the frame.

Denver wrapped up the final quarter by trading three goals to deliver the final result.

The Outlaws will face either the Charlotte Hounds or Ohio Machine, whose semifinal game is currently underway, in the MLL Championship game on Saturday, Aug. 20 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Ga.
